PATRICK COSGRAVE, who has died aged 59, was a colourful journalist and author whose career reached its peak during the 1970s, when he was political editor of The Spectator and then special adviser to Margaret Thatcher; his self-chosen persona as a reactionary English Conservative was in stark contrast to his upbringing as a poor Irish Catholic.
