Hamlet es un clásico de la literatura. Fue escrita en la época en la que se considera que Shakespeare alcanzó su madurez. En ella, a un joven príncipe danés llamado Hamlet se le aparece el fantasma de su padre para decirle que ha sido asesinado por su tío, actual rey de Dinamarca y casado con su madre tras el asesinato de su padre. Tras enterarse de lo ocurrido Hamlet trama una venganza con su tío y su madre. En esta obra de teatro se combinan la venganza y algunos soliloquios realmente brillantes que Shakespeare coloca en boca de sus protagonistas. El más conocido de ellos es el de "ser o no ser". En todo el texto, el autor dibuja la mentalidad de las personas de su época. Esta pieza escrita para teatro también ha inspirado otras obras artísticas como el célebre cuadro "Ofelia" del artista prerrafaelita John Everett Millais o el argumento de la película "El rey león".
